Thailand is called the Land of Smiles....and "Thai" means "Free". The Thai are one of the oldest cultures in the world. Their origins hve become somewhat controversial in recent times, though in the past, it was thought that about 4500 years ago they migrated down out of China. Thailand is primarily Theravada Buddhist, which is a very conservative branch of that religion. The king and queen are revered as both the heads of state, and of the religion of the country. While surrounding countries have been torn by warfare and revolt, Thailand has remained very stable, with only occasional outbreaks of political unrest. Several years ago when the military reacted harshly to student unrest, the King expressed his displeasure and the military immediately came to heel. The monarchy is held in such esteem by the people that no power faction has dared risk royal censure.
